The City of Tonawanda, NY, is located on the northern edge of Erie County, north of Buffalo and south across the Erie Canal. It covers a land area of 3.8 square miles, home to a population of about 15,000 people. The city is surrounded on three sides by the larger Town of Tonawanda, housing some 75,000 residents across almost 19 square miles of land.
When the town was established in 1836, it included land that would become the present City of Tonawanda, established in 1904. Many residents refer to their home as the “COT,” meaning the “City” rather than “Town.” The city holds the annual Canal Festival, celebrating Tonawanda’s historic location on the western end of the Erie Canal.
One of the Town of Tonawanda’s best known landmarks is a Korean War-era “blue jet,” on loan from the U.S. government since 1959. Meanwhile, a museum in a former railroad station displays exhibits on the area’s lumber industry and Erie Canal history. The Town of Tonawanda Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 2009.
